This article is based on my past experience watching the Yodogawa Fireworks from the left bank (Umeda / Fukushima / Noda side).
Currently, due to construction of the Yodogawa Left Bank Expressway, the Umeda-side riverbank is closed to the public and viewing is prohibited.
If you plan to attend, head to the right bank (Jūsō / Tsukamoto side) instead.
Also, this year (2026), the event will be held in autumn on Saturday, October 17, instead of the usual August schedule!

How I Got There
From Osaka Station and the surrounding Umeda area, I walked through the cluster of buildings toward the Yodogawa riverbank on the left bank side. It takes about 20–30 minutes on foot from the station to the viewing area, and it feels a bit far. The crowds were already enormous early in the day, and it took quite a while to reach the spot I was aiming for.

If you plan to watch the fireworks, use stations on the right bank such as Jūsō or Tsukamoto.
What Is the Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival?
The festival began in 1989, created mainly by local volunteer staff. Today, it’s a beloved Osaka tradition known for its dynamic production.
The massive “wide starmine” fireworks synchronized with music and the semicircular “underwater fireworks” that burst on the river’s surface are spectacular. Fireworks rising against the backdrop of Umeda’s skyscrapers create a uniquely urban Osaka scene.
Four Hours of Waiting and Fireworks Too Big for the Eyes to Hold
To secure a good spot, I started staking out my place four hours before the show. Enduring the harsh summer sun while sitting on a leisure sheet felt like training, but I managed thanks to food from the festival stalls and some conversation with friends.
The spot I chose was on the left bank near the launch site shown on Google Maps—and it turned out to be absolutely perfect.
Once night fell and the fireworks began, the distance to the launch site felt unbelievably close. Instead of “looking up at the sky,” it felt like my entire field of vision was filled with fireworks. The booming explosions shook the air and resonated deep in my stomach. The sheer intensity made all those hours of waiting completely worth it.
After the Finale: A One-Hour Battle Just to Exit
The finale’s rapid-fire barrage drew huge cheers and wrapped up the show on a high note… but the real battle began afterward.
With hundreds of thousands of spectators leaving at once, the route from the riverbank to the main roads became a massive bottleneck. We moved a little, stopped, moved a little, stopped again—it took over an hour just to exit the riverbank.
Even after reaching the station, entry restrictions were in place, and getting onto a train was another ordeal. I fully experienced the famous Yodogawa Fireworks “the show is amazing, but the way home is brutal” reality.
This Year’s (2026) Schedule
The 38th Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival will once again be held in autumn this year!
- Date: Saturday, October 17, 2026
- Time: 19:00–20:00
- Viewing Area: Right bank only (Jūsō / Tsukamoto side)
- Left bank (Umeda side) remains closed to the public.
The benefit this year is enjoying the event in cooler weather instead of the intense summer heat. However, because all spectators will be concentrated on the right bank, crowd control and advance planning will be more important than ever.
Notes for Visitors
- Getting Around: It’s quite a walk from the station to the venue. Sandals are risky because your feet may get stepped on—comfortable sneakers are strongly recommended.
- Best Part: The explosive finale. It was the most powerful fireworks display I’ve ever seen.
- Good to Know:
- Temporary toilets are available, but lines can be extremely long (30 minutes or more). Go early.
- Buying tickets at the station afterward is nearly impossible. Make sure your IC card is fully charged for round-trip fare before you leave your home station.
Summary
The venue is a bit far from the station, and the long wait plus the chaotic return trip can be tough—but the overwhelming scale and intensity of the Yodogawa Fireworks more than make up for it. The deep bass that shakes your body and the shower of light falling from above are experiences you simply cannot get unless you’re there in person.
With this year’s autumn schedule, the event will likely offer a slightly different atmosphere to enjoy.
