This article is based on my experience at the Onomichi Sumiyoshi Fireworks Festival.
Onomichi is famously known as a “city of slopes,” with narrow alleys and stairways winding up the mountainside. To reach the scenic viewpoints overlooking the fireworks, you’ll need to climb quite a bit—so wear comfortable, broken‑in sneakers.
Climbing steep hills in midsummer is far more exhausting than you might imagine!

How I Got There
I accessed the area from Onomichi Station on the JR Sanyo Main Line. The moment you step out of the station, the Onomichi Channel (the sea) is right in front of you—instant excitement.
But from there, heading toward the hillside viewing spots means climbing narrow slopes and stone stairways nonstop. It felt like a full-on leg workout.
📌 Approximate Transportation Costs (from Hiroshima / Okayama)
– JR Hiroshima → Onomichi (Sanyo Main Line): ¥1,520 one-way (about 1.5 hours)
– JR Okayama → Onomichi (Sanyo Main Line): ¥1,340 one-way (about 1 hour 20 min)
– The Shinkansen (Shin-Onomichi Station) is faster, but you’ll need a bus to reach the seaside area. Check JR’s official site for updated fares.
What Is the Onomichi Sumiyoshi Fireworks Festival?
This festival has a long history dating back to the mid‑Edo period. About 13,000 fireworks are launched from barges floating in the narrow Onomichi Channel between Onomichi and Mukai-shima.
Because the city sits in a bowl-shaped landscape between mountains and sea, the sound of the fireworks echoes off the hills, creating a deep, resonant boom that you feel in your stomach—a uniquely immersive experience.
Daytime Sightseeing, Nighttime Fireworks From “No-Reservation Needed” Viewpoints
Since I was already in Onomichi, I spent the day exploring. First stop: Onomichi ramen at a seaside shop. The soy-based broth with floating pork back fat clung perfectly to the thin noodles—sweaty summer ramen is unbeatable.
After that, I wandered through the retro shopping streets and took the ropeway up to Senkōji Park for some sightseeing.
As evening approached, I started to worry about finding a spot for the fireworks… but Onomichi has a huge advantage:
You can watch the fireworks from countless spots on the hillside—no need to reserve or camp out for hours.
Because the entire town clings to the slopes, simply sitting on a small stairway or roadside terrace gives you a panoramic view of the channel and the fireworks. Unlike other festivals where you must claim a spot under the blazing sun, Onomichi lets you enjoy the show from your own “private special seat” found along the hillside.
(Though getting there requires climbing some truly brutal slopes!)
This Year’s (2026) Schedule
The schedule for this year’s Onomichi Sumiyoshi Fireworks Festival has already been announced!

- Time: 19:30–20:30 (planned)
- Location: Offshore of Sumiyoshi Shrine, Onomichi Channel
Around 13,000 fireworks will once again illuminate the night sky and sea.
If the weather is bad, the event will be canceled with no postponement, so be sure to check the forecast.
Notes for Visitors
- Getting Around: There are countless slopes and stairways. Pulling a suitcase up the hillside is nearly impossible—travel light or use station lockers.
- Budget: Transportation + food (Onomichi ramen, cafés, etc.).
- Best Part: Watching fireworks not by “looking up,” but from the hillside—at eye level or even looking down at them. The reflections on the water were stunning.
- Good to Know:
- Onomichi Station gets crowded after the show, but because people descend from various hillside paths, it doesn’t become the kind of gridlock you see at flat riverbank festivals.
- You’ll be walking down dark slopes and stairways—use your phone’s light to illuminate your steps for safety.
Summary
The hills can be physically demanding, but in exchange you get the incredible reward of stress-free viewing from your favorite angle, without the usual struggle of saving a spot.
Spend the day enjoying Onomichi’s nostalgic streets and ramen, then end the night with fireworks from a breathtaking hillside location—this festival offers a full day of enjoyment and is highly recommended.
